Healthy Cozy Hot Chocolate

Regular hot chocolate mixes contain harmful ingredients and chemical additives like this:

Ingredients: Sugar (sugar, glucose solids), Modified milk ingredients, cocoa, Hydrogenated coconut oil, Salt, Cellulose gum, Dipotassium phosphate, Silicon dioxide, Flavour and artificial flavour, Sodium silico aluminate, Mono and diglycerides, Acetylated tartaric acid ester of mono-and diglycerides.

YIKES! If that doesn’t scare you, there’s 24 grams of sugar in just 2 Tbsps of mix!

If you love hot chocolate, but not the sugar hangover that follows, you’re going to love this recipe! It’s dairy-free, refined sugar-free, chemical-free and full of rich, chocolate flavour!

Ingredients Matter

Coconut Milk

Coconut milk is an excellent source of healthy saturated fat, that can actually help support cardiovascular health, brain function, mental health and hormones! Regular cow's milk contains lactose (sugar) and casein (protein) which are common allergens that promote inflammation. Coconut milk is low-carb and anti-inflammatory.

Tips:

  • Choose BPA-free canned coconut milk

  • Get unsweetened carton coconut milk - So Delicious is my favourite.

  • Check the ingredients! At most there should only be 3 in canned coconut milk: Coconut, water and guar gum (thickener).

  • Avoid canned milks with sodium metabisulfite, which is linked to possible respiratory, allergenic and immune effects according to the EWG.

  • try blending in cocoa butter or MCT oil for even more creaminess!

Cocao

Cocao (no that's not a typo) is a higher quality, unprocessed version of cocoa.

It's rich in polyphenols, which are naturally anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, magnesium, manganese and B vitamins.

Cocao can improve nitric oxide levels, promoting better circulation, cardiovascular and brain health.

Cocao seeds contain theobromine, a natural stimulant also found in caffeine, but it's less stimulating. Theobromine is one of the reasons for the mood-boosting effects of chocolate.

Coconut Sugar

Coconut sugar is a healthier, low-glycemic alternative to regular sugar. It contains a type of fibre called inulin, which helps slow down the release of sugar into the bloodstream, so it doesn’t spike your blood sugar as rapidly.

Pink Himalayan Salt

This is a natural, unrefined salt that contains minerals like magnesium and potassium, in addition to sodium. Refined salt is very unnaturally high in sodium, but consuming Himalayan or Real Salt is important for our health.
