As we get closer to Christmas, many find themselves more stressed than any other time of year. Why is it that Christmas has become such a stressful time, when it was meant to be just the opposite? Cozy up with a blanket and a cup of (healthy) hot chocolate and let’s look at a few ways we can make this busy season a little more enjoyable!

Perfection is Not the Point

For a lot of people, Christmas can be a little overwhelming. It’s busy with events, long hours at work, and the pressure of providing extravagant gifts for one’s family. Not to mention the stress of dinners with family members who aren’t always the easiest to get along with. This year, try to focus on what really matters, be grateful for what you have, and make it more about your time together than what you receive. Give yourself some grace and know that everything doesn’t need to go exactly as planned.

It’s OK to Say “No”

So you have 6 holiday parties this month and feel obligated to go to all of them? Were you asked to host Christmas Eve this year, but are exhausted? Don’t forget that your time and energy are valuable, and it’s ok to say “no” and be selective with whom and what you give them to. Switch it up this year and ask everyone to bring a dish and have a pot luck. Choose to attend the most important events, and spend the other evenings relaxing with family, catching up on a project, or spending a quiet night at home alone – without all the guilt!

Support With Nutrition

Did you know that when you are stressed, your body utilizes more nutrients? Support your system with nutrients such as vitamin C, B vitamins, essential fatty acids, vitamin D and magnesium, which are all great for combating stress. Stress also wreaks havoc on your gut flora, so be sure to add probiotics for digestive support and to replenish your good bacteria. Ultimately, focus on eating more whole, unprocessed foods, and get your veggies in everyday. Enjoy a sweet treat here and there, but keep it balanced. Your body will thank you after all those Christmas parties!

Unwind and De-stress

Most people think that relaxation is a novelty, but it’s a necessity. Make a point to carve out time this month to de-stress, however that may look for you. Take a few deep breaths during a party, take a bath with Epsom salts, meditate for 5 minutes, try a hot yoga class, or read just for fun!

Do One Thing to Better Your Relationships

The holidays can bring up traumas, painful memories, and can slice open old wounds we thought had healed long ago. Relationships can be challenging, but even in the midst of quarrels, we can take steps toward reconciliation. Forgiveness is powerful, and when you forgive, you’re the one that is set free. Additionally, holding onto anger or resentment manifests itself physically as disease down the road and inhibits healing.

Be Intentional, Be Present.

A few days each year, we are given the opportunity to spend time enjoying the company of our loved ones. Choose to be intentional with your time and be fully present. Maybe that means going for a walk with a family member, or taking time to talk with a friend going through a hard time. If you choose to be intentional, you’ll find yourself more fulfilled, joyful and you’ll enjoy the Christmas season much more!

What’s one thing you will start doing today to take the pressure off and make your Christmas season more enjoyable?
